Our mission
A joint European forum for intensive care medicine
Established on 24 February 2006 and restructured through a joint MJCICM-ESICM agreement approved by the UEMS Executive Committee on 24 October 2017, the Board functions as a joint forum for the MJCICM, the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) and the European scientific societies representing the primary specialities practising in intensive care.

Recognition of the discipline
It supports the recognition of intensive care medicine as a discipline under Annex V of Directive 2005/36/EC.

One common training framework across Europe
The Common Training Framework — Training Requirements for the Core Curriculum of Multidisciplinary Intensive Care Medicine — was adopted by the UEMS Council in October 2014.
EU activities
Consulting on the issues that shape intensive care
The European Board is actively consulting on many important issues for intensive care practitioners, from the EU Health Security Interest Group and the UEMS CPD Charter to the EU Preparedness Union Strategy and cross-border health threats.
Patient safety
Signatory of the Declaration of Vienna
In October 2009, the European Board signed the Declaration of Vienna, promoting patient safety in intensive care medicine.
